Located just off Canterbury Road in Blackburn South, Hana Kafe Japanese Eatery is a small, cosy spot serving a humble and satisfying range of Japanese dishes. The menu includes teishoku (set meals), donburi, sushi, sandos, and Japanese drinks. They also offer sushi and donburi platters for pre-order or takeaway.

When we arrived for our 6:00 pm reservation, it quickly became clear this is a place you need to book in advance—all the tables were already taken. A few diners had ordered the impressive-looking sushi platters, which featured a colourful mix of sushi, nigiri, and sashimi.
The ordering system is all done via QR code, and it’s a self-serve environment where you’re expected to help yourself to cutlery and water. There was very minimal staff interaction, apart from being shown to our table, but that suited us fine given the casual vibe.

We ordered the Three Buddies Taco Sushi ($18.90), featuring salmon, tuna, and scallop; the Poke Bowl ($21.90), and the Beef Menchi Katsu Donburi ($20.90), which came with a deep-fried beef patty served over rice. To drink, we added a Strawberry Matcha ($7.90) and a Hojicha Latte ($5.50).
The food was quite hearty and wholesome, with each dish offering the familiar balance of rice, protein, and vegetables you’d expect from a Japanese meal. Everything was well portioned and nicely presented.
Overall, Hana Kafe is a great little eatery that serves comforting Japanese fare in a relaxed, no-fuss setting. We’d happily return to try more of their offerings.
